  • The Pros and Cons of Using a Yoni Steam

Vaginal health plays a large role in determining a woman’s overall health and, according to Mayo Clinic, poor vaginal health can lead to stress, relationship issues, and low self-confidence. Thankfully, these days people are more open to discussing women’s health and well-being. Having these conversations and making sure we have the knowledge to take care of our bodies can do a world of good. There are many ways to take care of the vagina. Some people choose to consume herbs like Shatavari, a root that's known to help balance hormones, increase blood flow to the vagina, and help with lubrication. Other people may decide to add apple cider vinegar to their diets. According to Healthline, ACV may be effective for addressing bacterial vaginosis. A 2017 study published in Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine suggests that apple cider vinegar can cure vaginal candida infection. Also known as v-steaming or vaginal steaming, Medical News Today says that the goal of yoni steaming is to cleanse and enhance the health of your vag. It's performed by sitting over a pot of steaming water for 20 to 45 minutes. You can add herbs such as basil, rosemary, wormwood, or mugwort to the water to potentially boost benefits depending on the herbs. What are the pros of yoni steaming? Medical News Today says women who have tried vaginal steaming report benefits like: reduced bloating minimized cramps and heavy bleeding during menstrual cycle boosted fertility promoted healing after giving birth There have even been reports of benefits outside of vaginal health such as reducing stress, treating hemorrhoids, increasing energy, reducing fatigue, and addressing headaches. GoodRX Health adds that yoni steams have also been said to detoxify the womb, rebalance hormone levels, and offer relief from symptoms of menopause. Many holistic practitioners believe that yoni steams are also tied to spiritual benefits. A spa in Honolulu, Hawaii claims that yoni steams help women reconnect with ancestral wisdom and also helps access feminine energy that caters to your creative potential. A doula and womb wellness service in Denver, Colorado believes that yoni steams are important because the womb carries not only our traumas, creativity, wisdom, and dreams, but the "joys, tears, and hopes of our foremothers and the spirits of ancestors." What are the cons of yoni steaming? According to Cleveland Clinic, none of the benefits of yoni steaming are backed by evidence or data. “Certain medications are well absorbed vaginally," said Ob/Gyn Talia Crawford, MD. "On the other hand, there is no proven health benefit for any of the herbal products used in vaginal steaming. Also, it is unknown if an adequate amount of the herbs’ chemical properties are absorbed through vaginal tissue to reach the bloodstream." Dr. Crawford also said that yoni steaming can be dangerous due to the delicacy of the vulva. In fact, according to a 2019 study, a patient who used a yoni steam to reduce vaginal prolapse ended up with second-degree burns. It's also worth noting that some scented herbs can adversely impact pH levels and cause bacterial vaginosis. She said that it's important to remember that the vagina is self-cleaning and doesn't require the aid of yoni steams, douching, or any other tools.
